I’d suggest a few shades of grey in four of the last five ’spots’ reflecting the diversity of Executive Branch not just the Presidential hue.

Grant,
I’d agree there’s a much more complex story that could be told, including members of Congress, the Supreme Court, and other roles that over time have been filled by people of color. The graduated gray you suggest would be an interesting approach that shows how Barack Obama is the culmination of a movement that’s been building over a many years.
Here, I was looking to communicate, as painfully simple as possible, the profound change that has occurred in what many consider the most powerful position in the world: the President of the United States.
